The Punch Story

We are a group of around 1,300 incredible pub businesses in the UK. Punch was born in 1997 and we quickly began to expand our portfolio until we were listed on the stock exchange in 2002. In the years after, we acquired some great brands, including Pubmaster, Innspired Group and Avebury Holdings and, in 2017, we were acquired by Patron Capital and May Capital. 

Patron Capital & May Capital have injected new life into Punch, giving us the firepower to invest £90m into our pubs over the next 3 years as well as develop our industry leading training academy & state of the art development kitchen.

The public house has always been a Great British institution, and it was this idea that led to Punch being born in 1997. Wanting to link brilliant people with brilliant pubs to keep Great British pubs firmly at the heart of local communities.

Since then, we’ve continued to expand our portfolio of Punch properties and our address book of successful publicans. In 2002, we were listed on the stock market.

Whilst free Wi-Fi in pubs seems standard now, it wasn’t always back in the day. In 2013 we set-up free access for customers in 3,000 pubs across the UK. 

With a growing trend of delivery, in 2016 we partnered with Just Eat to provide a better service for Punch customers. This offered locals to get their favourite items delivered to their front door for pubs with a well established menu. For pubs who don’t offer food, customers can order from Just Eat and get it delivered to their local Punch pub.

In 2017 we relaunched our online ordering portal – The Punch Buying Club – making it mobile friendly, faster and more efficient so our publicans can order at a time to suit them, access paperless billing, dispense data, as well as a whole set of other features. It was a game changer. 

To round off the year, we launched our online training portal – The Punch Progress Console – that’s a one-stop-shop, allowing our publicans develop their skills and their businesses in a way that suits them. 

In just 12 months, The Punch Buying Club took it’s 100,000th order, and sold a staggering 100 million pints. 

In late 2018 we opened our industry-leading training space – The Academy – in Burton-upon-Trent. It was another turning point for our training, meaning our publicans get invaluable hands-on experience in what is essentially a fully-functioning pub. 

At the start of 2019, we launched our quarterly magazine The Round, starting a new era of support for our publicans. And now, with a brand new look and a diverse range of 1300 pubs, we’re ready to take on 2020 and beyond!

March saw the introduction of our recognition scheme #OurAwesomePeople which celebrates successes and recognises individuals for living positive behaviours or doing something simply awesome.

Why We're Proud as Punch

We’re constantly investing in our pubs, and we’ve got big plans (and some great financial backing) to develop our pubs over the next three years. 

 We have a track record of launching and developing innovative concepts – from our award-winning Champs Sports Bars to inviting locals – and our group chefs are always busy developing menus to make guests happy. We offer incredible marketing support – think the world’s largest pub team darts competition and the biggest national pub quiz – and with a mixed estate of leased, tenanted and retail businesses, we’re well placed to share best practice between publicans.

 And it’s not just the pubs we’re investing in. We’re leading the way in training – our training package gives our Publicans some of the best induction training and professional development in the industry. We’ve even been recognised with a National Innovation and Training Award for our Art of the Possible training programme. With training you can do from your training, our publicans are finding it easier than ever to develop their skills. 

 Talking tech, we’ve got an industry-leading online ordering and information portal – The Punch Buying Club – which has now taken well over its 100,000th order and sold our 100 millionth pint of beer!
