The Red Lion is a popular pub with Edwardian roots and a handsome brick facade, covered doorways and tiled porch. It’s neatly and tastefully decorated. Leather effect settees sit in front of the bar with a separate games area to the rear right. Guests bask in the glow of a cosy snug at the rear left warmed by a real fire whilst watching major sporting events.

Locals love the cask ale offering and live TV sports coverage. The savvy operator will capitalise on these to pull in punters on big matchdays. It’s currently wet-only. However, an on-site kitchen offers clear potential to develop the business by offering a small food menu. The ideal Publican will therefore be creative and bold. You’ll be willing to experiment to see what locals like to enhance an already popular venue.

It has an open plan trading operation, with a public bar and a dedicated pool/sports area. The catering kitchen presents an opportunity to introduce a small food offer to supplement the current wet trade. Outside, the pub has a couple of tables to the front and a small courtyard beer garden with a smoking solution to the rear. This decked area is used well and is ideal for barbeques on summer days.

We will undertake a small scheme to enhance the trading area to include new flooring and decoration. Install up to date TVs to improve the sport offer.

The ideal operator

To succeed here, you’ll need to be personable and outgoing, ideally a sports fan, and to have some previous pub and cellar experience. You’ll be a people person who knows your locals by name and their favourite tipples without them having to ask. You’ll be a charismatic person with an infectious personality, a sports enthusiast, and a great host.

The location  

The Red Lion sits on the main road and bus route through Handbridge, a district of Chester that lies on the south bank of the River Dee, less than a mile from the city centre. Handbridge has a village feel, and this is very much a community pub with a fantastic local following. The pub sits in a prominent position at the heart of a large, residential neighbourhood, and customers will typically walk to the pub from the local area.
