If you’re a history enthusiast who yearns to live by the sea, this is the pub for you. The Ship Inn dates from the early 16th Century and is the second oldest local building after the church opposite.

It was a private home within an estate called Stringers. Records show that Lord Darcy bought it in 1639. Then Thomas Joy purchased the property and orchard for £45 in 1709. At this time, the village already boasted two alehouses: The Queen’s Head and the King’s Head. John Cobbold was the purveyor of beer for the pub in 1788 and subsequently bought it 12 years later. So, this grade II listed building is awash with stories of old.

You’ll find the Ship Inn sitting prominently about a mile and a half from the seafront. The savvy operator will capitalise on trade from the caravan site visitors nearby. The pub has established a reputation for high quality and reasonably priced pub food from a popular menu in which many specials are showcased. Here you’ll find an open plan trading area with a designated dining area to the rear on the far side. Guests also enjoy the beer garden in the summertime.
