Overview

Could you run this pub in Welshpool?

The Wellington is a cosy, intimate pub steeped in history. Over 150 years old, the publicans used to brew their own beer onsite using water from a well that was located behind The Eagles pub, which is no longer in existence. It was even cited in a list of inns in 1858. The pub has had a recent refurbishment improving the outside of the pub to attract more customers.

Ideally located in the centre of Welshpool, a small Welsh town on the Shropshire Borders, this is a wet-led business that capitalises on the later circuit-trade. Located only a few yards away from Welshpool’s only late night venue, The Wellington is popular with guests for its pool, darts, and TV sporting events.  The daytime market is mainly from regular drinkers of lager and cask ale, but the imaginative publican could also take full advantage of the night-time market.

About the local area

Welshpool is a small rural town situated in Wales on the Shropshire borders, 15-20 miles south of Shrewsbury and Oswestry. It is called Y Trallwng in Welsh, which translates as “the marshy or sinking land”.

You will discover a large livestock market on the outskirts of the town, and the River Seven and Montgomery Canal also run through the location. Furthermore, Powis Castle situated on the outskirts of the town attracting about 150,000 visitors each year.

 Ideal operator

We are looking for an experienced and sociable Publican familiar with the dynamics of the town and surrounding areas. Someone who will be able to offer a good range of drinks to both daytime regulars and the later circuit-trade.

We need a hands-on night owl who is into sport and enjoys hosting events. We need someone who loves people and can welcome locals and new guests alike. You will have good standards of cleanliness, pull an excellent pint, and create delicious cocktails. It is ideal if you are looking for a wet-led pub and do not want to worry about serving food.
