The Downe Arms Inn in Castleton has been recognised as one of the best pubs in Yorkshire after being crowned Country Inn of the Year 2026/2027.

Taking home first prize at the Yorkshire Prestige Awards, the Punch Pubs & Co. owned pub impressed judges with its excellence across hospitality, customer service, quality and overall guest experience.

Having taken over the running of the pub earlier this year, Publicans Johnathon and Ashley Cairns had one ambition: to create a welcoming and inclusive environment.

“When we took on the Downe Arms Inn, our vision was simple: to create a traditional country inn where guests feel genuinely welcomed, enjoy great food and a proper pint and leave wanting to return”, said Johnathon. “Drawing on our years of hospitality experience, we have worked tirelessly to breathe new life into this wonderful village inn while preserving everything that makes it so special.”

Reflecting on what may have impressed the judges, Ashley revealed the couple’s approach to running a pub. “We believe a good pub isn’t just about what’s on tap, it’s about the people, the atmosphere and a sense of belonging.”

Paul Hutchinson, Operations Manager at Punch Pubs & Co, added: “This award is a reflection of the passion, commitment and hard work shown every single day by our incredible team at The Downe Arms. Johnathon and Ashley have been amazing since they arrived and I’m proud to support them and the team on their journey.”

Nestled in the heart of the North Yorkshire countryside, The Downe Arms Inn is a traditional country inn offering warm hospitality, freshly prepared food, and comfortable accommodation.

More information about the pub can be found via its website and social media pages.
