The Stag Inn in Kimberley has reopened following a £150,000 investment by leading pub company Punch Pubs & Co.
The historic pub on Nottingham Road, which dates back to 1737, continues to be led by long-standing Publican Nick Rook.
Nick, who took over his hometown pub more than eight years ago, used to work in sales but grew tired of driving up and down the country and wanted to return home to where he grew up.
Nick said: “This is an important pub in Kimberley, everyone knows The Stag Inn, we host a lot of community events and groups. When I decided to become a Publican after years on the road, this was the pub I wanted to run but at that time somebody else was in charge so I had to bide my time. Eventually I was in the right place at the right time and with the help of Punch, we’ve grown the pub, made wonderful use of the outside space and delivered a local all locals can be proud of.”
The refurbishment works at the Stag Inn include a new outdoor canvas covering, new furnishings, an extended internal bar, a new children’s play area and refreshed décor. Throughout the programme of work, Nick was adamant the pub should not lose any of its character: “The pub dates back to the 1800s but the building itself is even older than that,” said Nick. “I have photos from 1905 that show horse and carts outside the pub, and it’s likely this was a stopping point on the road between Nottingham and Derby so naturally, it was really important that we retained all the traditional elements of the pub that make it so special.”
He continued: “I love the upgrades, new furniture and, the children’s play area was nearly as old as me, so we’ve disposed of that and installed something more exciting for the little ones.”
