The Pig & Whistle pub, part of Punch Pubs & Co’s leased and tenanted estate, has been crowned the best in England for its outstanding support of community and grassroots sports teams at this year’s PubAid Community Pub Hero Awards.
Publicans Keris and Lee De Villiers proudly entered their pub into the Community Sport Hero for England category, which celebrates pubs that champion grassroots sports or unite the community through sporting events.
To their immense delight, the Pig & Whistle won the award for its extensive support of local sports teams, beating two other finalists to claim the top spot.
The Wandsworth pub sponsors a local ladies netball club, The Wildhog Rugby Teams, Earlsfield FC, a player in the ice hockey team, The Streatham RedHawks, and more. They also have a running team, donate money from food sales to sports clubs for young people, and serve as a social hub for many clubs.
Speaking of their win, Lee and Keris said: “We are very proud to contribute to grassroot sports and that they form such an integral part of our community and pubs. We are delighted to have been presented with an award for something that is so close to our hearts. Many thanks to PubAid for their fantastic endeavours.”
The PubAid Community Pub Hero Awards celebrate the invaluable work publicans do for their local communities, recognising their fundraising efforts and commitment to supporting local and national charities.
