The Duke of Cumberland is a cosy market town pub at the heart of Kendal, Cumbria. It has a comfortable and homely interior which welcomes both locals and visitors who come to explore Cumbria’s beautiful countryside which neighbours the Lake District.
The pub consists of an open plan trading area with the bar being the central feature, serving all sides of the pub. It has a large outdoor area that doubles up as an alfresco dining area and beer garden that is the perfect place to enjoy those sunny days. Customers can be welcomed into the pub via a street entrance into the current sports area or from the carpark, that has 45 spaces, and through the al fresco area into the lobby and dining area.
The pub also features a spacious function room which can be booked out for special events and is regularly used by community groups such as the National Federation of Young Farmers Club.
We have exciting plans to invest in this pub. The refurbishment will include internal and external decoration to create a traditional brewhouse and hideaway feel with a local link. There will be a complete upgrade to the customer bathrooms as well as works to enhance the catering kitchen. There will also be improvements to the outdoor area to bring this amazing al fresco space to life.
About the local area
Kendal is considered the Southern gateway to the Lake District. The town benefits from beautiful rural surroundings but also has plenty of hustle and bustle. In addition to residents the area gets large number of tourists all year round. The South Lakeland Climbing Centre gets large numbers of daily visitors, who are attracted to the pubs craft and cask ale offer, and the Kendal Mountain Festival attracts almost 30,000 visitors each year.
The Duke of Cumberland is located on the outskirts of Kendal, getting plenty of passing trade from the nearby industrial and retail estate as well as being within easy walking distance of the shops on Kendal’s high street.
We are looking for a passionate Publican with a local link to this charming market town. An interest in Kendal’s outdoor attractions, such as walking, climbing and cycling will help to entice those who travel to see the areas beauty. There is also opportunity for an experienced cask ale or craft focused Publican to concentrate the pubs offer to cultivate a brewhouse experience.
This fantastic pub opportunity includes domestic accommodation that consists of three bedrooms, a private kitchen and lounge.

We’ll provide a high level of support giving you access to all the tools you need to make your business a success, from day one, including your own dedicated Operations Manager, access to exceptional training and development opportunities, as well as business planning, operations and accounting expertise for those less-than-glamorous bits of running a business.
Our five-day Punch Progress induction course will ensure you’re fully up-to-speed before you get started and from then on we’ll provide ongoing support to help you maximise the efficiency, sales and profitability of your pub.
Punch Tenancy agreements have shared repairs liability, we will help you manage your ongoing repairing obligations. We do this by operating a repairs and maintenance fund.
* The calculation of the initial Ingoing Costs assumes a minimum deposit (£3,000 or £6,000) plus legal fees. The subsequent deposit build up (if any) will need to be paid over 52 weeks. This can be discussed with the recruitment team or Operations Manager.
