Pubs purvey so much more than drinks; they’re places to unwind, talk, laugh, and feel part of something. That’s why the values that we hold dear are thriving together, having pride in our stride, delighting every guest and ensuring that doing well, by doing good underpins the way we do business.
Pubs inspire those moments that live in our collective memories and provide support against stress, loneliness, and isolation. They’re the community’s pulse.
Although we know this implicitly; the challenge has always resided in proving it.
That’s why we teamed up with Northumbria University, Newcastle.
The result?
Their research demonstrates emphatically that pubs involved in local life don’t just lift their communities:
- *The average Punch pub inputs up to £1.3m of economic and social value back into its local community.
- *Punch Pubs generate over £4m for charities across the UK every year.
- *Each year, Punch Pubs create up to £1.7bn in economic and social value for the UK economy.
- *A typical Punch Pub spends around £56,000 with local suppliers, supporting nearby businesses.
- *For every £1 spent in a Punch Pub, 58p goes to suppliers and a further £1.30 is generated by activities created within the wider economy.
- *A Punch Pub generates an estimated £3,200 per pub per year in charitable contributions.
- *By getting even more involved in local life and boosting community engagement, an average pub could grow its annual revenue by up to £150,000.
That’s how vital pubs are to our society.
*When a Punch pub spends money, it doesn’t just stop there. Thanks to what’s known as the ‘multiplier effect’, every pound stretches further – supporting wages, boosting local suppliers, and circulating through the community to create even more economic and social value. For the purposes of the above statistics, we have adopted the higher multiplier. Please refer to the report for a more detailed breakdown.
