Big changes are brewing in the market town of Malton, as The Gate Inn pub closes its doors to undergo a £400k investment with leading pub company Punch Pubs & Co.

Reopening this October, The Gate will not only look drastically different, but it will also reopen as The Filly & Flagon, with a bold new brand, refresh and exciting new offer.

At the helm of this exciting new chapter are experienced Publicans Lloyd Gallon and Kim Woolley, who have over 60 years of combined hospitality know-how. They were thrilled with the opportunity to reopen the new Filly & Flagon and cannot wait to see what the future has in store for them.

They said: “We’re really looking forward to our new venture and excited to make our mark on this fantastic community pub. With our combined experience in running bars and hotels, we feel like we have the skills and practice to truly bring this pub back to life.

“There are exciting changes taking place at The Filly & Flagon, and our top priority is to ensure our guests enjoy an excellent service within a cared-for and comfortable environment.”

The mammoth investment will see dramatic changes at the pub, starting with a full external redecoration, which is set to make The Filly & Flagon unrecognisable. Striking new signage will adorn the pub’s exterior, and the currently unused beer garden will have a major upgrade. Think covered timber booths, industrial light fittings, festoon lighting, astroturf and a faux flower wall – giving it a well-needed refresh and uplift to create a space that is comfortable and practical all year round.

Inside, the dated exterior and dark aesthetic will soon be a thing of the past as all-new metal and leather upholstered stools, complemented by blue tonal patterned carpets, ambient bar pendants, and brass fonts, serve up a touch of sophistication and elegance.

The bar area will undergo a major upgrade, not just visually with its new painted bar front, hanging bar pendants and low brass fonts, its new range will boast a range of craft and cask, premium spirits and fine wines – all to be enjoyed in their newly created warm and friendly environment.

Small but intricate details will also pay homage to the pub’s history, with chalkboard artwork, a bespoke mirror, artwork and bric-a-brac bringing an authentic feel, injecting new life into the pub.

Punch Pubs & Co Operations Manager, Paul Hutchinson, added: “We’re thrilled to be reopening and investing in this fantastic community pub. This has been a long time in the making, as we wanted to ensure every detail was right. From the offer to the Publican, our priority is ensuring that this pub thrives within the community for many years to come. I’m confident that a complete change of name, décor, drinks offer, food menu and most importantly, with Lloyd and Kim’s expert leadership, that this pub will flourish and guests will love their new local.”

In addition to the Filly & Flagon’s new drinks offer, Lloyd and Kim will be introducing an all-new food offer comprising traditional and hearty, home-cooked pub classics.

The relaunch will also bring new job opportunities, providing a welcome boost to the community.

With the grand reopening just around the corner, The Filly & Flagon looks set to be a vibrant hub for Malton once again, and Lloyd and Kim’s chapter is all about bringing joy and connection to every guest that walks through their doors.
