The Union Inn in Malton has reopened with a refreshed new look and two experienced publicans at the helm.

Andy and Wendy Sonley took over the village pub in the Summer of 2025, and immediately set to work restoring it as the heart of the community.

Their transformation has included a full kitchen refurbishment with updated equipment, a complete interior redesign, and – most notably – the launch of a brand-new restaurant.

Andy said: “Wendy and I love the pub, and we saw so much potential in it, but there were many opportunities we wanted to seize. It needed a refresh and a sparkle, and we wanted to broaden the offering.

“In addition to all of the other changes, we were delighted to be able to convert part of the pub into a restaurant, which, since we reopened, has been a real hit with guests. We brought in a new Chef, who’s got 30 years of experience in the industry, and created a new menu that offers a little something for everyone.”

The Union’s new food offer boasts an array of dishes from their three-course Sunday lunch to weekday specials like fish and chips, and their specially themed curries. Guests have left glowing reviews about the food, with many complementing the variety, quality and service.

Beyond the new restaurant, Andy and Wendy also refurbished the rest of the pub’s interior with new carpets, a complete redecoration and furniture – expanding the revamp outdoors and into the Union’s beer garden too.

Since its reopening, the pub has gone from strength to strength – welcoming guests who hadn’t visited for years, and attracting new faces.

Andy continued: “We’ve been overwhelmed by positive feedback. It’s great to see so many new faces, and shocked ones too – from people who can’t believe the difference we’ve made. Wendy and I are incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved so far, and have many other plans in the pipeline to ensure The Union continues to thrive for many years to come.”

Not stopping there, the hospitality duo is also planning an exciting refurbishment to their pub’s letting rooms, so that guests can enjoy not just a great pub, but a Bed and Breakfast too.

While further investment plans are finalised, Andy and Wendy are making exiting plans for upcoming celebrations like Valentines Day and Mother’s Day.  All information about their updates, menus and scheduled events can be found on the pub’s Facebook page.
