The Priory pub, nestled on Micklegate Street, will reopen its doors this week following a four-week joint investment with Punch Pubs & Co.
After closing in October for the extensive refurbishment, the beloved local will welcome guests back and unveil its stunning £230,000 makeover on Thursday.
Andrew Spark, who has been the General Manager for 19 years with Charter Inns – part of Queensway Advisory, is delighted with the updates and is looking forward to welcoming guests once again.
He said: “I am really excited about this investment and thrilled to be reopening the pub with a refreshed look and offer. Above everything, we want to give back to our guests who have remained loyal over the years and ensure that they know that The Priory is a safe, inclusive space where everyone who walks through the door is guaranteed to have a great time.”
The Priory has been carefully renovated from top to bottom by EDD Building Services, whose aim was to bring the pub back to its role as a community hub.
Locals may have already noticed the new exterior, with refreshed signage and a gentle sparkle that makes the pub stand out. But it is indoors where the transformation truly shines.
Inside, its makeover greets you from the moment you walk through the door. Not only have some of the physical characteristics changed – now featuring a cosy open fireplace and comfy lounge area – the whole pub has had a complete redecoration, and guests will notice a common theme.
Inspired by its long-standing connection to York Races, the Priory has embraced a whole new aesthetic with horse-related bric-a-brac, a big feature throughout. Framed pictures, horse-themed wallpapers and a soft, muted décor bring a charming old-English feel to the pub – with a playful, eclectic twist.
Every corner has been thoughtfully updated. Upholstered seating, a restored bar, timber flooring and patterned carpets all tie together the fresh look, blending comfort with character. Even the toilets have had a glow-up, featuring new tiling, marble vanity units and brass accents that echo the pub’s stylish new vibe.
Beyond the décor, the pub now offers distinct zones tailored to every kind of guest – whether there to unwind and catch up with friends, soak in the live sporting action, or even get involved themselves.
Across one side of the pub, guests will be able to take on the all-new and interactive Target Dart Zone boards whilst cheering on their favourite team or backing a horse, and over on the other side, they can relax and unwind in their newly refreshed lounge area.
Kamran Aziz, Managing Director of Queensway Advisory, added: “We’re thrilled to unveil the newly refurbished Priory pub, a vibrant hub of great entertainment, good company and unforgettable moments. We have curated an experience for customers to explore exciting new offers, fresh promotions, and an atmosphere made for celebrating together.”
A live acoustic singer and special drinks offer will celebrate this Thursday’s official reopening, and guests will be thrilled to know that the famous Friday karaoke nights are also making a comeback.
