Publicans Louise and Brian Howard-Blades are raising a glass to a fresh new chapter at The Nags Head in Carlton, Nottingham, following a refurbishment by Punch Pubs & Co.

Since taking the reins in 2016, Louise and Brian have poured their hearts into the pub, building it into a welcoming space rooted in community, family, and friendship. Their journey began with the support of their guests, who generously crowd-funded to help them get started – a testament to the strong bond between the pub and the community.

Louise shared: “I’ve got 30 years of experience in this industry, and it’s one I hold very close to my heart. My parents were Publicans, so stepping into this role felt natural – and I wouldn’t change it for the world. The support we’ve had from Punch over the years has been fantastic. Combined with the loyalty of our guests – many of whom we’ve seen grow up here – it truly makes this role worthwhile.”

The refurbishment has breathed new life into The Nags Head, with every detail carefully considered. From new carpets and textured wallpapers to soft, muted tones and pendant lighting, the pub now radiates warmth and charm. The bar room, a favourite gathering spot, has seen the biggest transformation, with new high tables, shelving, and stools creating a cosy hub for socialising, especially during the ever-popular weekend karaoke.

Elsewhere, the 70s-style gents’ toilets have had a complete makeover too, and now reflect the pub’s refreshed aesthetic of cool, modern tones while preserving its character.

Louise added: “Our new bar room looks and feels so much cosier – it’s always been the place where everyone congregates at the weekend, so having that extra seating has been amazing. Most importantly, we’re a community pub, and our community is happy with their local – it’s a win-win all round.”

Punch Pubs & Co Operations Manager, Harry Bourne, shared: “As always, it’s the people who make the business what it is, and this was a real opportunity to re-energise Lou and Brian. The transformation in them, as well as the pub, has been fantastic. I’m really looking forward to seeing them lead the pub into its next chapter with renewed drive and passion.”

With the refurbishment complete, Louise and Brian are already looking ahead to their legendary Halloween and Christmas celebrations. From giant cobwebs and spooky skeletons to a life-size Santa’s sleigh and multiple Christmas trees, The Nags Head is known for going all out to create magical moments for guests of all ages.

As the pub continues to evolve, one thing that remains unchanged is Louise and Brian’s unwavering commitment to their guests and the community. They’ve proven that The Nags Head isn’t just a pub – but a place where memories are made, friendships gained, and everyone feels at home.
